Monday the 25th July 2011 saw the very first hungryhouse.co.uk English Curry Awards which were held at the Sheridan Suite in Manchester.  The awards are aimed to recognise and reward the curry industry innovators.

A panel of independent judges, after carefully ensuring strict criteria had been met, crowned Shabir Hussain of Akbar's King Of Curry 2011.  The category had competitors from the whole of England.  The prestigious Curry King of the Year Award was presented by Ahmed Saeed, Chief of Habib Bank AG Zurich.

Mr Saeed said, "Mr Hussain is a man who embodies the spirit of brilliant entrepreneurship coupled with achieving the highest standards in modern South Asian cuisine. With over 20 years of experience, he is today the proud Chief Executive of over ten restaurants employing more than 400 members of staff. This man works tirelessly to support the local communities' particularly young people who are inspired by his relentless hard work and dedication in turning his dream into reality."

Shabir's passion for curry was showcased in 1995 at his first restaurant in Bradford, where he started with only had 28 seats, now the Akbar's name is renowned throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, North East and the Midlands.

On receiving the English Curry King Award Shabir expressed, "I am overwhelmed with receiving this award and it is a sheer surprise, especially seeing the kind of industry entrepreneurs that are present here tonight people who I would myself see as great role models and pioneers, many of who have been in the industry more than 20 years before I started my first restaurant.  It’s truly fulfilling to know that my years of hard work has been so widely recognised in a very competitive industry, with such a high calibre of operators"

Shabir embodies the spirit of brilliant entrepreneurship key attributes for curry royalty. The competition for the Awards was extremely fierce, Mr Hussain's 20 years of experience within the industry.   Leading by example to inspire young people with his relentless hard work and dedication in turning his dream into reality; made him the clear winner for one of the most prestigious accolades of the evening.
